Steve Perlman, a close friend of Rubin, came to Android’s rescue. He gave Robin $10,000 in cash. He later wired an undisclosed amount to Rubin as a seed fund.

Perlman revealed in a press interview that he helped Andy because he believed in the Android project. He refused to own a stake in the company.

In July 2005, Google purchased Android Inc. for 50 million dollars, absorbing Android’s employees as part of the acquisition. Now working with Google, a team led by Rubin developed a mobile device platform powered by Linux.

Patent lawsuit with Oracle:

Oracle sued Google on August 12, 2010, over infringement of copyrights related to Java programming language.

Oracle initially sought damages of up to 6.1 billion dollars. However, a United States federal judge reduced this valuation.

Google submitted multiple lines of defense, claiming that Oracle’s patent was not valid.

A district court in May 2012 gave a judgment in favor of Google. The judge ruled that the Java APIs used by Google were not copyrightable.

However, on May 9, 2014, a federal circuit reversed the district court ruling on the copyright issue. 

Anti-competitive challenges in Europe:

Fair Share, in conjunction with Microsoft, and Oracle filed a complaint againstAndroid in 2013.

Fair Share alleged that Android’s free-of-charge distribution model constituted anti-competitive predatory pricing.

As a follow-up to Fair Share’s allegation, the European Union filed a formal antitrust complaint against Google on April 20, 2016.

In 2018, precisely July 18, the European Commission gave its verdict, ruling against Google and fining the company to a tune of 4.3 billion dollars.

In addition to lawsuits directly filed against Google, various proxy wars have risen against Android.

Apple and Microsoft have sued several Android phone manufacturers over patent infringement.
