Working at Microsoft has been GREAT. I’ve been here for 8 years.

But it’s hard too.

For a decade before I joined Microsoft, I ran the show. Here, I’m just a peon, and not being on campus often means not being “inside” which creates several barriers to success.

There is the politics, the constant org changes, the haters spanning your blog, the travel. (Not to mention the cut in pay :)

Today I had a bit of a cool thing happen.

Last night I installed Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 – which I’m VERY excited about.

Today I fired it up to start working on some new videos and the top item in the “Latest News” page was an item about my latest video.

Trivial, i know, but my spirits valued thy boost !!

    Congrats to you…

You have problems with your website. It is mostly very slow and sometimes times out. Anyway, the XSS video was great.

    Congrats!

But I really comment to second @Aykut – every page load seems to have a good bit of lag.

Seeing as how it has Firebug, first load in Firefox = 52 seconds before I started seeing any activity and at ~59s the page was finished loading.

Clicking on a link to another story (http://misfitgeek.com/blog/community/my-move-to-graffiti/), 38s until I see anything and 1m until the page is finished loading.

Always very exciting to be able to celebrate successes, no matter how trivial. Congrats! I’m looking forward to Beta 2 as well!

So, VS2010 Beta 2, huh? Any nuggets of wisdom as to when the general public might get a taste? Please don’t say we have to wait until PDC09…

Your XSS Cross Site Scripting video was outstanding! I would be happy if you can publish the code as well!!!

Keep up the good work Joe, love your blog posts.

As a developer I really appreciate the sacrifices that guys like yourself make in order to work "inside" MS.

While my work as a developer benefits one corporation, your work benefits the entire dev community.

Congratulations Joe! I’m sure it has been tough, but I’m sure you have learned a ton as well. You are not a peon to those of us who follow your blog and twitter account. You are definitley someone for aspiriing and professional developers to look up to. Again keep up the great work and personally, I’m jealous of your getting to install VS 2010 beta 2. Again congrats!

    Great to hear Joe !!

I hope VS 2010 will be much faster than VS 2008. VS 2008 has been pretty sluggish comparing to VS 2005 for large web applications..

Don’t complain! I would almost die to work for Microsoft. The recession has hit me now and I’ve becoming redundant. It sucks to be unemployed!

Hey Joe, I’ve followed your blogs and video posts for quite a while now, here in the UK, and I’ve learned a great deal about ASP.Net in the process. In fact, all the stuff I’ve learned from your informative blogs and videos helped me greatly in my first ASP.Net job, and they continue to aid me in my current .Net role. Keep up the great work, and you’ve made a real contribution to my own personal learning (and to a certain extent, my career), without evening knowing it! In particular, your videos are the easiest to follow and absorb.

Don’t worry about the haters; these guys probably spend 6 months trying to get a line of code to work in Java, instead of using .Net (cue the lashback from Java programmers!)

Keep up the great work, it DOES make a difference!

Thansk Guys – and Graham, nice when someone else starts a sotrm here:):)

Thanks for being honest and leaving yourself vulnerable to make others feel better by letting them know that they’re not alone in the common struggles that we all face.

Not sure if Milestone might be the correct term :)

Milestones can add significant value to project scheduling. They were created by APPLE and have since became popular. Milestones allow little freedom in project management and give no allocation if it is on schedule or not. They follow no critical path and are added only to add complexity to a project.

About the 2010 Beta 2: is there any (insight) news when non-employees, i.e., everybody, can have a look? It’s been a long long time since Beta 1 and I’d love to try the new beta.

Any findings on the Beta that you’d like to share with us?

  32. Abel Braaksma on October 19, 2009 6:40 am

    Update to my last comment:

The actual date for the beta 2 for the public is now known (21st Oct 2009), see my post that tries to summarize the roadmap (and estimates the unknown): http://www.undermyhat.org/…/visual-studio-2

    Hi Joe,

Thanks for your videos. In my final year I have the opportunity of getting into Microsoft when it comes for placement. But I think I should be good with programming as i am now busy with other interesting topics like Finite Automata and Compiler Design.

Once again thanks Joe, you are very helpful and helped me get out the benefits of Dreamspark. Now i am the Microsoft Student Partner (MSP) of my College.

Hey Joe, don’t let it get you down. Remember, you can’t enjoy a sunny day without some rainy one’s in between.

Keep up the awesome video tutorials on ASP.net. I thought I knew alot, but you’re really helping me bring it full circle! As an aspiring programmer about to start his career, those videos are helping me choose a path I want to specialize in: ASP.Net!
