Visual identity is important. (Plus, you need something besides the url to put on a tee-shirt.)

Cool open source applications all have cool logos. Since this is a collaborative project and since I have NO artistic ability, I thought we could get some artistically capable folks involved in NETOOP by starting a logo contest. (Remember, good applications should be theme-able so were are going to NEED aesthetically creating folks involved after we implement a skinning and teeming strategy.)

So, if you have an idea for a log, email me a file (.png, .gif, .jpeg ONLY) .

I’ll create a wiki page and we’ll collectively decide which one to use.

When you email the file, include whether you want it posted with a URL or email address or not.

How about getting a better name first? NETOOP?

  2. Joe Stagner on June 11, 2009 10:58 am

Ok – what is your suggestion for a name and a MATCHING available cdomain name.

It makes to sense to say "that sucks" if you don’t have a vialbe alternative suggestions.

I think .NET Object Orriented Portal is acurate and easy and would have visceral brand identity, but I’ll look forward to your allernative suggestions.

    Joe,

May be we can have Netoop as the project code name and we can name the portal with another name with a punch. Something like "FiSpo Portal" (Stands for Fighting Sports Portal). I am sure the best brains around here can come up with some great ideas for the name of the portal.

  5. Joe Stagner on June 11, 2009 12:58 pm

    Definatly agree.

    NETOOP is the software project.

?????? somethign else will be the Community Implimentation of NETOOP !!

  6. Paul on June 11, 2009 1:00 pm

I think NETOOP is a good name, and falls into the normal convention naming, e.g. MOODLE

One question though.. how will it be pronounced?

NE-TOOP? or NET-OOP (as in op-eration), or NET-OOP (as in ooops!)

  7. Alexander on June 11, 2009 1:17 pm

NETOOPS is even better (S – for Sports)

    or NETSOOP

  8. Joe Stagner on June 11, 2009 1:26 pm

I think NET-OOP (as in ooops!)

Can we make use of entity framework[Linq2Entity].We can learn a lot from there.

  10. Joe Stagner on June 11, 2009 3:17 pm

I’ll query the "members" but I think using EF is the way to go.

  11. jsalinase on June 11, 2009 5:11 pm

I’ll send you a logo in a few days.

  12. Anthony Grace on June 11, 2009 5:37 pm

I didn’t realize that it stood for ".NET Object Oriented Portal’. It’s fine for the project but was too close to "NETPOOP" for a domain name ;-)

  13. Anthony Grace on June 11, 2009 5:47 pm

    http://WWW.NETPORTAL.NET is available as a domain name…

.NETOOP is probably a better term for branding the type/genre of software, rather than for branding the actual application. It also might be too similar in naming to XOOPs and for PHP that might make more since not every framework/portal is object oriented for that community.

Personally I’ve been using Japanese (english spelling, not Kanji) for project naming. MS’s code names for products have always been better than the official product name after the fact. Even Atlas still sticks to this day.

Maybe you can call it Bang: Built against .net geeks. (then you’ll need another product called boom, and yes i’m kidding for the sarcasm impaired).

Combing over a thesaurus helps as well.

A decent word or name really does help with branding and creating a logo, much like the name of a sports team, and even helps with the look, feel and attitude and moral of the people working on the application.

Sometimes people miss that part of doing software, it should not only be fun, but a developers moral and excitement over something drives and goes along way.

You could have a cool greek or asia themed application since its targeted towards doing sports or fighting. Gallio has done well pulling off the roman/greek.

    names like portal. arena, coliseum

unfortunately aperture and dojo is taken..

  17. willscotty on June 11, 2009 11:22 pm

smelled, i mean spelled backwards its POOTEN. for a play on words I get "NEE TOP" so how about a knee high gym sock, 1970′s cartoon style… <crickets>

  18. willscotty on June 11, 2009 11:27 pm

isn’t there already an OO portal over at dropthings.omaralzabir.com

you certainly cant do any worse for a name that "Dropthings". kidding, Omars Portal rocks the ajax hard core.

  19. jalpesh on June 12, 2009 1:23 am

    Hi Joe,

.NETOOPs is a better option because it represents the cocept of the portal. We are doing it in object oriented way.

We can use ado.net entity model for this thing. I think we have to take care all the newest techonlogy available. There are lots of ORM available for this but clearly my choice is ado.net entity framework. even some site stackoverflow.com using linq2sql and works fine for them. ADO.NET Entity model is far better then this.

Another question is that wheter we should use 3.5 or 4.0 as 4.0 having some cool features avaiable for us.

  20. Jack on June 12, 2009 1:45 am

I prefer the 2nd, and the 1st is also not bad.

Never the 3rd, it looks like brother of WordPress!

  21. Umer on June 12, 2009 2:29 am

    what’s your email address ?

  22. wooncherk on June 12, 2009 3:58 am

I think NETOOP is okay, but we need to standardise the way people will read it. People might read it as NET[O-O-P] (read O, O, P ]seperately) or NET[OOP] (read OOP as oops without the s) or NE[TOOP].

I have some ideas of future logo that would like to share with all. Maybe someone who can paint could draw them.

    1. Make a programmer that lifts blocks, but instead of blocks – system block. Also he can pull it with keyboard. the link below is the image to get the idea of what I`m talking about.

    http://www.mosgorzdrav.ru/mgz/KOMZDRAVinstitutions.nsf/va_HFotosByID/foto_lpu_a2328_12/$File/ph01_sport_gp132.jpg?OpenElement

    2. Make a programmer lift the bar, that has CВs instead of that round metal things.

There are lot of other things can be created in this way, like person riding a bicycle that has Cds, instead of wheels. Everywhere CD`s can be used instead of wheels, System block instead of some heavy things and mouse and keyboard can be used for their wire that can be used like a thread, or something that one can hold.

Hope this will help somebody to draw cool logo :-) .

  26. Sandip on June 12, 2009 9:14 am

    I think it’s perfect name.

It represnts exactly what it’s about and really easy to remember.

  27. Luis on June 12, 2009 11:37 am

How about you change the name to NETCOOP for .NET Collaborative Object Oriented Portal, and them you can use the each color of the International Cooperative Alliance on each of the seven letters. That, with a nice typeface would make a nice logo.

  28. kumar on June 12, 2009 12:01 pm

yes I agree with this statement that Visual Identity is important. All the famous projects have a excellent visual identity.

Here are a couple of other ones.

    DNetASP-OOP

    ASPNet-OOP

    DNetOOP-WebF

    DNetOOP-MVC

Hope no one takes affense to the comments above I could not help myself.

  30. varun on June 13, 2009 5:25 am

    I think netoop pronounced NET-OOP is good…

  31. Joe Stagner on June 13, 2009 9:40 am

    ASPOOP ???

WOuldn’t people pronounce that as ASS – POOP ?

    I don’t think I’d go with that one .

  32. PhilG on June 13, 2009 1:06 pm

I like NETOOP a lot. It does subconsciously remind me of basketball (Nets,Hoops). Maybe a logo using a bball net cleverly intertwined with the NETOOP’s name displayed inside?

  33. David Villarruel on June 13, 2009 2:56 pm

    I like NET[COOP]

  34. varun on June 13, 2009 4:11 pm

  40. Mukhtar on June 18, 2009 5:39 am
